This Sunday June 7th, we'll elect our representatives for the European Parliament. I made my choice: I'm going to vote Green (Bündnis 90/die Grünen in Germany)! And I invite you to do the same

Their vision for Europe is ambitious and far-reaching, and they have shown in the past an abiding commitment to the cause of a greater European integration. And I fully subscribe to their call for a major shift to a greener and more sustainable development, in the form of a "Green New Deal". We have to move away from fossile energy, and we need to do it fast.

The Greens are at the moment the best choice for a stronger, greener, fairer, and more democratic Europe!

Es wird Zeit, meinen Blog mal ein bisschen zu aktualisieren Heutiges Thema: die Oper! Diesen Monat habe ich in der Tat die wunderbare Gelegenheit gehabt, zufällig zweimal in die Oper zu gehen! Und beide Oper haben mich völlig begeistert!

Die erste Oper war der berühmte "Barbiere di Siviglia" von Gioachino Rossini, am Saarländischen Staatstheater. "Il Barbiere di Siviglia (ossia L’inutile precauzione)" ist ein eine komische Oper in zwei Aufzügen, und dessen Libretto ursprünglich auf Beaumarchais Schauspiel "Le Barbier de Seville" basiert ist. Die Geschichte ist leicht und anspruchlos, und mit viel Humor geschrieben. Und die Musik wunderbar stimmig und verzehrend!

Die berühmteste Arie von dieser Oper ist zweifellos "Largo al factotum della città" ("Macht Platz für den Factotum der Stadt), gesungen beim ersten Eintritt von Figaro:

Die zweite Oper, die ich die Chance hatte, diesem Monat zu sehen (auch am Saarländischen Staatstheater), ist die "Zauberflöte, von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Libretto von Emanuel Schikaneder). Diese Oper hat mir auch riesig gefallen! Die Geschichte spielt sich in einer fantastischen Welt ab, die von Vögelfängern, Riesenschlange, Eingeweihten, Zauberinstrumenten, Prinz, Prinzessin, Fürst und "Königin der Nacht" bewölkert ist.

Eine meiner liebste Aria ist "Der hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen", die zweite Arie der Königin der Nacht. Die ist als besonders anspruchsvolles Stück bekannt, da der Tonumfang bis zum F6 geht!

I'd like to share with you a highly interesting TV interview of the american anthropologist and developmental psychologist Michael Tomasello (co-director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leibzig). The interview covers a wide range of topics, from the notions of shared intentionality and its ontogenic emergence in human beings to the origins of human cognition & communication (in contrast with the Great Apes), to the biological and cultural dimensions of human social behaviour, and to collaboration and altruism. Enjoy!

The interview is conducted by Gert Scobel and was recorded in October 2008 for the German public channel 3Sat. The embedded video below is the full interview without cuts - the version actually broadcasted on TV was of course much shorter.

As a personal note: I had the chance of attending in March 2008 a one-week course given by Prof. Tomasello at the Interdisciplinary College (IK) on the " Origins of Human Cooperation" which I greatly enjoyed, and where I learned many crucial ideas on the origins of language and human cognition. If you ever have the opportunity to attend one talk or course given by him, don't miss it, he's a magnificent lecturer!
The course at the IK was based on the four lectures he gave upon receiving the famous Jean Nicod prize in 2006 (see the course website for details, a summary of each lecture, and links to the videos).

L'émission "A voix nue" sur France Culture a récemment consacré une semaine spéciale à George Steiner, le génial auteur d"After Babel", et l'un de mes essayistes contemporains préférés (que j'ai déjà mentionné à de multiples reprises à l'intérieur de ces pages: ici, ici, et ici).

George Steiner s'entretient dans cette émission avec Laure Adler, où il nous livre - avec son érudition habituelle - ses souvenirs, ses anecdotes, ses rencontres, et bien sûr ses innombrables passions et convictions intellectuelles.

Trouvé sur le Web: un chouette petit reportage réalisé en octobre 2007 par la chaîne francaise TF1 sur les kots-à-projet implantés à Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgique).

En gros, un kot-à-projet est un logement étudiant communautaire regroupant une dizaine d'étudiants qui, en plus de partager leur vie quotidienne, s'investissent également dans un projet commun, qu'il soit culturel, social, sportif, ludique ou humanitaire. Ceci de manière entièrement bénévole, cela va sans dire.

Comme l'explique le reportage, les kots-à-projet sont soutenus financièrement et logistiquement par l'UCL (Université Catholique de Louvain), qui tire une grande fierté de cette réussite.

J'ai eu la chance de vivre 3 ans dans de tels kots-à-projet:
- un an au kotéclown (dont le projet consistait à se rendre régulièrement dans des hôpitaux ou des centres psychiatriques pour y égaier la journée des enfants hospitalisés à l'aide de petits sketches et improvisations clownesques);
- et deux ans au rhétokot (dont le projet consistait notamment à se rendre chaque semaine dans des écoles secondaires pour aider les élèves de dernière année à "s'orienter" et réfléchir sur leur projet d'études).

Souvenir, souvenir...

I recently discovered (thanks to a friend) the excellent book "Sustainable Energy - without the hot air", by David JC MacKay, Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge. The book is about energy production & consumption without fossil fuels. It examines in detail - by providing numbers, not simply vague adjectives - the various sources of renewable energy currently on the market (wind, solar, tide, geothermal, etc.) and compare their potential against our current energy consumption.

Armed with facts and figures, the author brilliantly demonstrates that, by combining significant reductions in our energy consumption (notably in transport and heating) and a massive increase in renewables (possibly partially imported from abroad or associated with nuclear energy), it is possible to devise a realistic energy plan without fossil fuels, a plan that "adds up".

Hi everyone!

I'm now back in Germany after one week spent in Stockholm (at the Kungliga Tekniska högskolan, or KTH, the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology -- one of the best engineering schools in Europe) where the first spring school of the CogX project was organised. A very heavy week for sure, but also a very engaging and interesting one!

The two main objectives of the spring school were (1) to improve our practical understanding of the various issues and challenges involved in developping integrated cognitive systems, and of course also (2) to contribute to a global team spirit among the researchers involved in the project.

Both of the objectives have been successfully met! Most of the week has been devoted to a "group project" in which six teams were competing. The goal was to develop a simple robot capable of exploring the floor of a building to search for a cereal box placed in a random location, catch it and carry it to a drop-off area. Not as easy as it sounds Each team had at its disposal a Pioneer robot equipped with a laser scanner and a camera.

My team won the second place in the competition . We worked many, many hours, but it was worthwhile, and definitely lots of fun!

Some work-related news: We are currently working in my research group on a new project proposal on "Adaptive Strategies for Sustainable Long-Term Social Interaction", to be submitted to the next call of the EU Framework-Programme 7 (section "Cognitive Systems").

The goal would be to develop robots able to socially interact with humans over extended periods of time. Practically, the evaluation scenario will be to deploy such "social" robots in a clinical environment, where they will interact with hospitalized children undergoing diabetes treatment for a period of 5-10 days, to help them alleviate their stress and anxiety.

If the project is accepted, we will probably use the Nao robot (developed by the French company Aldebaran Robotics) as robotic platform. He's a bit expensive, but really cute . And he's packed with technological innovations!

Comme vous le savez, je suis en train de commencer une thèse de doctorat au DFKI. De nombreux proches et amis m'ayant demandé en quoi ce travail consistait précisément, voici ci-dessous une tentative de réponse (initialement trouvée sur ce site) que j'ai trouvée particulièrement drôle!

Avertissement: On nous a souvent demandé ce que nous faisions comme travail de recherche. Malgré tous nos efforts pour rester vagues et un peu compréhensibles, nos parents, nos amis répliquaient invariablement à nos explications: 'oui, oui...' en soupirant plus ou moins, plus intrigués que jamais. Aussi nous sommes nous résignés à raconter aux masses étonnées non pas notre travail, mais ce qu'est la vie du thésard. Il semblerait que nous ayons réussi, à en croire les premières réactions.
