Kürzlich habe ich auf diesen Blog eine Note über das irische Nein zum Lissabon-Vertrag geschrieben, wo ich die Idee vertrete, eine echte Europäische Föderation neben der gegenwärtigen Union zu begründen.

Offenbar bin ich nicht allein, von der Notwendigkeit dieses Ansatzes überzeugt zu sein - Daniel Cohn-Bendit (ein deutsch-französischer Politiker und Präsident der Grünen-Fraktion im Europäischen Parlament) spricht sich öffentlich auch für diese Idee aus.

Er schlägt eine Zweiteilung Europas vor: Eine lose Verbindung von Staaten, die das Europa des freien Marktes bilden. Und ein politischeres, föderales Europa, in dem europäische Entscheidung auch demokratisch auf transnationaler Ebene gefällt werden.

... just kidding, of course. I still have a brain . No, actually I just wanted to share with you a satirical video about Republicans which is currently topping the chart on Youtube, and which I found really cool.

The video, written and directed by Charlie Steak and produced by SyntheticHuman Pictures, links back to a web page that more fully explains the filmmakers' earnest points of view as expressed in the video.

The video is a satire, of course, but nothing is invented or falsified - every segment of the film is based either on the official program of the Republican Party for the upcoming elections or on the political record of the current administration (detailed explanations can be found on their website).

America deserves better than this bunch of right-wing populists - in November, let's kick republicans out of the White House!

Mi sono imbattuto in un interessante testo di Altiero Spinelli, un politico e scrittore italiano post-bellico, sovente citato come uno dei "padri fondatore dell'Europa" per la sua influenza sull'integrazione europea . Morto in 1986, lui ha lottato tutta la sua vita per l'unificazione dell'Europa e la costruzione di una vera federazione europea, che potrebbe chiamarsi gli "Stati Unici d'Europa".

Il seguente testo è uno estratto del suo celebre "Manifesto del Ventotene, redatto da Altiero Spinelli e Ernesto Rossi durante il periodo di confino negli anni '40. In questi tempi di euroscetticismo crescente, il suo messaggio è più chè mai d’attualità.

Vous le savez tous, l'Irlande a dit «non» au Traité de Lisbonne, par un référendum organisé le 17 juin dernier dans la petite république insulaire. Le «non» l'a emporté à 53% des voix, contre 46.6% pour le «oui», et une participation totale de 53%.

Le traité devant être approuvé à l'unanimité des membres de l'Union, l'Europe se retrouve donc une nouvelle fois en crise. Structurelle. Cela fait en effet dix ans que l'Union Européenne tente de réformer ses institutions, sans grand succès. Il s'agit du troisième «non» qu'elle doit essuyer en l'espace de quelques années. En 2005, ce furent la France et les Pays-Bas qui se sont opposés par référendum au "Traité instituant une Constitution pour l'Europe", plongeant l'Europe dans une première crise. À présent, ce sont les quatre millions d'Irlandais qui, par leur vote, paralysent durablement les institutions d'une communauté d'un demi-milliard de citoyens.

Européen convaincu et partisan d'une Europe fédérale dotée de compétences fortes, j'ai été terriblement déçu et attristé par ce résultat, qui, si l'on n'y prend pas garde, peut s'avérer dévastateur pour l'avenir de l'aventure européenne.

Für diejenigen, die dieses amüsante Video noch nicht gesehen haben... Die wissenschaftliche Beschreibung des "gemeinen Homosapiens Saarlandus"! Sau gudd

Diese Woche haben wir (= die deutsch-französische Theatertruppe "Le Pont", zu der ich gehöre) unser diesjähriges Theaterstück «Rhinocéros» aufgeführt. Und wir haben einen Achtungserfolg erzielt!

Anscheinend gab es ein bisschen weniger Zuschauer als letztes Jahr für «Zazie dans le métro», aber trotzdem hatten wir die Freude, durchschnittlich 50-70 Personen für jede Aufführung (insgesamt fanden drei statt) zu empfangen - gar nicht schlecht für eine Laientheatergruppe! Und laut den Kommentaren, die wir gehört haben, haben die Zuschauer sich sehr gut amüsiert!

Für mich war die Vorbereitung dieses Theaterstücks eine sehr bereichernde Erfahrung - ich hatte nie vorher Theater gespielt und hatte nicht erwartet, dass es so "berauschend" sein könnte!

Some personal news:

1. Most importantly, my paper "Salience-driven contextual priming of speech recognition for human-robot interaction", that I co-wrote with my supervisor, got accepted to ECAI 2008! I'll be the one presenting the paper there, so I'll have the chance to spend one week in Greece (Patras), at the end of July! Woohoo . I haven't been in Greece for years, and I just love this place. I hope I'll be able to spend a few days of vacations after the conference, either in the Peleponese, in central Greece (ie. visit Delphi?) or in the Ionian Islands. Don't know exactly yet, but in any case I'm sure to have a fantastic time
2. from Wednesday to Sunday (7th to the 11h of May), I'll be in Amsterdam for the 43rd Studentische Tagung der Sprachwissenschaft, where I'll be giving a talk on my current research on robust parsing.

As some of you may know, I have a long-lasting interest in microfinance, which I see as one of the most effective means to empower people to lift themselves out of poverty and achieve more social justice on a worldwide scale.

Recently, I discovered Kiva [ www.kiva.org ], a non-profit organisation promoting development through microfinance. Kiva allows you to lend money via the Internet to specific low-income entrepreneurs in developing countries.

Here's how it works:

1. Accredited microfinance institutions around the world, called "Field Partners", post profiles of qualified local entrepreneurs on the Kiva website.
2. Lenders browse and choose an entrepreneur they wish to fund.
3. Kiva aggregates loan capital from individual lenders and transfers it to the appropriate Field Partners to disburse and administer.
4. As the entrepreneurs repay their loans, the Field Partners remit funds back to Kiva.

Short and sweet:

1. Good news: my paper "A salience-driven approach to speech recognition for human-robot interaction" has been accepted to the ESSLLI student session!
2. I consequently also registered to ESSLLI, which will take place in Hamburg in the first two weeks of August.
3. From the 7th to the 11th of May, I'll be in Amsterdam to participate to StuTS 2008, a linguistic conference organised by and for students. I submitted a talk proposal there (on spoken dialogue comprehension), I hope it will be accepted.
4. I'm currently busy writing a paper for CoNLL-2008 (a conference on computational natural language learning). The deadline is set on April 28th, I hope I'll be able to finish everything by then...
5. I've been kindly invited to participate to a colloquium in Nancy on June 24-26th, where I'll present the work done for my master thesis.
